The Margaret Mahy Family Playground, named after one of our most acclaimed children’s writers, is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. It has been designed with input from the city’s school children, and to reflect Canterbury’s four main habitat types with a forest zone, a peninsula zone, a plains zone and a wetlands area.
The City Care and JFC Joint Venture Team were selected as the main contractors on this project.
Our competitive advantage lay in our previous experience in delivering high profile streetscape projects, to a high standard and within challenging timeframes – while working in a collaborative environment.
We added value to the project by our management of the electrical installation, where the design and procurement of the electrical works were incomplete at the start of the construction period.
There were also numerous parts of the project where we used our large knowledge base to progress partially completed design works, to a stage where detailed design was available and able to proceed to construction.
The works needed to be carried out in a very short six month period, so our ability to carry out preliminary and detailed design works took pressure off our client and enabled the works to flow smoothly through to their successful completion and opening by the Prime Minister on the agreed date. The delight that is evident in the faces of families that continue to visit the playground in huge numbers provides our team with a huge sense of satisfaction for a job well done.
